It used to be that sound was just what musicians would do, using traditional, analog instruments, and whatever the resulting sound was, ended up being what people would listen to. Then, there’s the engineers working in post-production, in the movie, TV or music industry.

Someone who works on an upcoming movie can have a very large and diverse job. They may need to take sound that was recorded on the field, sound from a recording studio, music, and many sound effects, mixing all of them together to get the perfect sound track for the film. They may also have to create these sound effects, using a variety of computerized equipment, electronic keyboards, and more. And when things break, they may have to make sure all the wires are connected properly, going to the right places, and not causing any unwanted echos.

To become a sound engineer, there’s various paths you can take. Some people improvise themselves audio engineers simply by getting into the field as a hobby, making podcasts, home videos, or helping out at a local radio station. Then, they simply get better and better, and end up having a full job doing that without any kind of degree. This is pretty rare however and becoming less the case. Now, there’s specialized schools that train sound engineers, and even a lot of known colleges have sound engineer degrees. Depending on the education you have, and the industry you work for, your salary will vary as well.

Starting engineers with no experience can expect around $25,000 as a yearly salary. If you get to work for a big studio however, through contacts or simply your skills, then you can expect something more akin to $45,000. Then, as you gain experience and get certified, you can prove yourself as an excellent engineer, and get your salary to go up, eventually reaching $95,000. Again, this depends on the company you work for, as few radio stations have the money to pay that kind of salary.

The career of sound engineer is quite interesting and lots of fun. If you like technology, and have a good ear for sound, then you can fit well into that profession. While the starting salary can be somewhat low for people without any experience, the barrier for entry is also quite low, and there’s a lot of competition. But good sound engineers are wanted, and the salary reflects that as well.
